Today Pastor Kevin said, “It’s like seeing a beautiful deer coming across the field and a hunter comes out and shoot’s him.” That reminds me of something I had written about a deer years ago. Ironically it was in one of my first published articles. Back then I did not know enough to be careful about protecting my rights so I’m not sure if I even own it anymore.
The story of the deer was used as an example why one would be glad that they had a journal. I told about a deer that had come into our yard and was eating pears off the tree. I spoke of catching the moment in words and preserving the image for all time. I spoke of the beauty of the deer in great detail. I also told of his grace as he turned and ran when he noticed he had a human audience. I didn’t mention in that article that the deer had been a very bad guest in my parent’s orchard. That deer had taken one bite out of each pear to see if they were ripe I imagine. The pears were my father’s favorite fruit, that is why the tree was there in the first place. By biting the fruit the deer ruined it. We had no pears to can that year thanks to our beautiful, graceful visitor.
